The Route
The reason we will circle The
Earth going eastwards is that thereby we will slow Earth’s
rotation – a bit – with the power of our motorcycles. This
again slows down our personal ageing process in that the
days then will be longer and we get to use them better. At
night when the bikes are parked the effect is not in effect,
but this matters little, as by then we are asleep. The only
major problem will arise when we cross the Bering Strait and
the dateline, and we lose a full day.
As usual the point of departure is Toten, Norway, and
presumably this will be on April 1st 2009. Those who know us
may doubt our ability to stick to such a deadline, but
there’s like totally no reason for this kind of doubt.
The route has been chosen based on where bad roads can be
found, where there’s some nice to be seen and where
traveling is suitably dangerous.
The first leg will be by way of Copenhagen, through the
Baltic countries, Belarus, Ukraine and down to Yalta on the
Crimea peninsula. It will take us through well know
territory, where we have friends and know our way around. It
will be good for breaking in the bikes, because if something
goes seriously kapoof we know there’s help to be found.
Second leg will go from Crimea til Anchorage, Alaska. We’ll
drive across by way of Kerch, Stalingrad and down through
Kazakhstan, then up to Siberia, down again through Mongolia
and once again up to Siberia. There we will ride eastwards
to Magadan, which is the easternmost point you can go on
wheels in Asia. Then we will sail or fly to Anchorage.
From Anchorage we will head for Canada, go across there and
end up in Vermont, USA for a major pitstop. By that time we
will have done 25,000 kilometers, so the bikes will be torn
apart for inspection. [Translator’s note; ”If it ain’t
broke, don’t fix it.”]
After that we’ll criss-cross southwards until hitting
Cancun, Mexico, after which we’ll catch a boat to Cuba and
celebrate Christmas on The Cuban Combined Drunkards and
Fireworks Festival in Remedios. Cuba will be a long stop and
a vacation before we attack Central and South America.
No detailed plans have been made for Central and South
America except that we’ll criss-cross our way through there
too. Maybe we won’t make plans for there at all. The only
given is that we’ll go by boat to South Africa and work our
way home through that continent. Making detailed plans for
Africa doesn’t make much sense either, as it tends to be too
unstable for planning two years ahead. |
